The Last Artist Circle Meeting of the Year

The Last Artist Circle Meeting of the Year
This Friday (December 17) at 7:00 pm at 546 Chapel St.

The Elm City Artist Circle is a place of gathering for any and everyone who creates (or desires to create) art. Any kind of art--visual, written, graphic, musical, anywhere in between--at any level.

If you fall into that category, and will be around on the evening of the 17th, you are invited to join for the last meeting of 2010. Bring a piece of art that you have created, and be willing to share--we'll be swapping pieces and creating based on what we've chosen. (It may sound intimidating, but it doesn't have to be.)

If you have nothing you want to share, still come! You can create while you're there. No pressure to be 'phenomenal'-- we're all learning and growing here. Feel free to bring your artistically inclined friends along with you.

Hope to see you there.

A Sample!

Endocarp
Marilyn De Guehery
Inspired by the poem of the same name, by Alysia Harris

At Artist's Circle last week, we created art based off each other's artworks. We wanted to send out one example:

Marilyn created a graphic design piece inspired by Alysia's poem, Endocarp (below).

ENDOCARP

It opens, like thunder
blooming

The feeling that I can’t
do this.

That the walls of my room
were made of Eden

And the trees began the
sin of autumn

In June.

My mother buys me fruit
whenever she comes to visit

Somehow, without fail, I
forget to eat

Smelling it go rotten

In a cheap silver bowl

Next to the set of cutting
knives.

What’s precious-

A pair of fine winter
gloves

In thunderhead grey?

Or an orange grove of
friends?

Four years, the citrus,

Still bleeding into
November.

On days the sky turns to
soft steel,

I watch umbrellas open,

Those first-responders,
hesitant shields.

They understand the risk
involved, how rain can palpate

Even the tiniest wounds.

Sit for a week and study

A pear’s skin purse neat green
bruises,

One after the other.

Like an old lady turning
Into a very small pea.

We learn to live our
separate lives,

Knives placed at opposite
ends of a table.

In the aging silence,

Trying not to attract attention.

This etiquette too, a
sin.

Be Creative THIS THURSDAY!

Happy October, artists!
As we wrap up this beautiful month of leaf-changing and apple-picking, we'd like to meet together to check in and to spend some time creating in community. This Thursday at 546 Chapel St. at 7:30 pm, we will be artist-ing away. We will briefly chat about the upcoming ECV Café Night, which you ALL should be a part of, since Artist's Circle is at the heart of it! Then we will proceed to spend sometime sharing our art and creating more art. Please bring a piece of art (visual, brief written art <~7 minutes to read, or musical) with you, as well as anything you might need to work freely in your favorite medium. We'll be using each others' art, as well as the Bible as inspiration, so please try to bring something to contribute! Get ready to BE CREATIVE!

Can't wait to see you guys!

Also, there will NOT be dinner. But there will be some delicious snacks (contact me at Juliet.Buesing@yale.edu if you'd like to help!)

much love,
J, T & M

Creative Jam Session SATURDAY (Sep 25)

Hey Everybuddy!

I wanted to extend my hospitality to the Artist Circle and friends to a creative jam session at my office on September 25, 2010 (Saturday) 8:15 pm.

I know my house would be awesome but i don't want to disrupt my folks at home. But I really want to have a jam session. So let's bring art and guitars and drums and whatever you feel like you can express yourself.

I hope this works a lot and spread the word.

Office address : 59 Amity Road, Office #7, New Haven, CT 06515
Email astroshin@gmail.com with any questions.

Joy and blessings,
Shin

Conversation on faith and art

Thanks to everyone who came out to Titus' studio last night, especially to Courtney for leading us in an exploration of truth, beauty, art, creation, and faith and to all who contributed. Next meeting TBA-- please email Juliet, Tina or Marilyn, if you're interested in sharing your art at our next meeting.

conversation on sunday aug. 15

"A Conversation on Creation Process and Christian Identity in Art"
sunday august 15
8:15 pm
546 chapel st.

We're going to spend some time talking about how we go about creating our artwork, whether visual art, songs, poems, stories, or everything in between. Where do we get our ideas? Do we wait for inspiration or work our butts off until something we do is satisfactory? What are different ways to think about creation? How do we create spaces for creativity in our lives? And what does it mean to be a Christian in the secular art world? How do we create art true to our faith while avoiding being boxed in or ruled out as "religious artists"?

**if anyone would like to bake or bring some light desserts/snacks, feel welcome. dinner will NOT be provided.
See you there!

the artist circle begins!

greetings friends!!!
welcome to the new blog for the artist circle! here's the most recent updates on artist circle happenings. thanks for an amazing first meeting and conversation! a few thoughts:

1. please try to spend some time creating in the next few weeks! create spaces for your own artistic expression, or make spaces for a group art activity: jam sessions, painting spaces, writers circles... i believe that we can do it all! let's gather together in our art! don't be afraid to take some leadership in setting anything up (especially if you have the gift of hospitality or administration and like doing this kind of thing).

2. we talked at the last meeting about the idea of a Cafe Night, and we're going to go ahead and start planning that. we're talking with church leadership and we'll have more details soon, but be thinking about who you can invite and how you can contribute-- and how we all can work together to create/host a space for art and expression to happen freely and safely. this also can serve as something to work toward, a space to share what we are now creating with the wider church community.

3. please send me (juliet) some contact information! Name, Email, phone, artistic disciplines of choice, anything else that might be relevant. i'll assemble this info into a contact sheet so we can all stay in touch.

4. encourage each other and ask for help. i challenge each of you to meet up with one other person on this list to specifically talk about art, before we meet together again as a large group. extra points if it's a person you don't know as well. =) get each other's thoughts and advice, share work and ideas, create together. be intentional about community.

5. keep inviting. =)

as always, if you have more ideas or thoughts or anything, don't hesitate to email me.

much love,
=) juliet (& marilyn & tina)
